Comparative History of Ideas (CHID)
CHID is a one-of-a-kind interdisciplinary program that connects practices from across the arts and sciences to examine ideas in their cultural, historical, and political contexts.

Language is integral to human thought, communication, and action. English introduces you to enduring works of literature, helps you understand how culture works, and teaches you to produce clear and compelling writing.
FRENCH & ITALIAN STUDIES
French & Italian Studies prepares students to become leaders by providing them with French and Italian cultural literacy through professionally relevant linguistic, research, and interpretive skills.
GERMAN STUDIES
German Studies place the artistic and intellectual traditions of German-speaking countries and their people in interdisciplinary contexts; students build language skills while studying media, philosophy, gender, and more.
LINGUISTICS
Linguistics is the scientific study of language mechanics - through the study of languages from different families, students will draw on disciplines including psychology, anthropology, sociology, and computer science.
MIDDLE EASTERN LANGUAGES & CULTURES
The Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures (MELC) studies of the languages and cultures of the Middle East, Central Eurasia, North Africa, and the Horn of Africa.
SCANDINAVIAN STUDIES
In Scandinavian Studies, students develop an enhanced understanding of the languages, literature, culture, and politics of Scandinavia and the Baltic States.
SLAVIC LANGUAGES & LITERATURES
Slavic Languages & Literatures studies the languages and cultures of Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union in one of the most comprehensive programs in the nation.
SPANISH & PORTUGUESE STUDIES
Spanish and Portuguese Studies is committed to the production and transmission of knowledge of the Spanish and Portuguese languages and the literatures and cultures of Spain, Portugal, Latin America and US Latinos.
