Admission/ Declaring the Major

The Asian Languages & Culture program is an open major. Students can declare this major at any time by 
making an appointment with an adviser with Humanities Academic Services.

60-75. The number of credits depends on the pre-existing language skills a student brings in.

Pathway to Completing Major Requirements

Modern Language Training (15-30 credits)

Complete second-year level (203) in one Asian language from:
Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Sanskrit, Urdu, or Vietnamese.
If a student has pre-existing language skills above the 200 level, then 15 credits of language training 
above the 200 level must be completed at a minimum.

Tertiary Elective Courses (30 credits) 

  • Students can choose 6 (six) more five-credit classes to round out their work for the major. May 
  • include any combination of language and/or disciplinary AL&L courses, subject to meeting the 
  • major’s other requirements. 
  • 10 credits may be chosen from a department outside of Asian Languages & Literature. 

Provisions

  • At least 30 credits of work must be at the 300-400 level.
  • Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA for courses applied to the major
  • Minimum 30 credits taken in residence through the UW
