What initially drew you to your humanities major and what topic(s) are you excited about?

I was interested in the Humanities after finding out that I wanted to be a teacher. I wanted to explore Spanish as I’m a first-generation immigrant with parents from Mexico! Thanks to the Humanities, I was able to explore different topics in Spanish.

How do you see your humanities education connecting to your future plans?

As an upcoming Secondary Education Spanish Teacher, I want to ensure my students are taught by someone who’s a native speaker of the language. Most of my students of color will surely appreciate that their teacher is a POC (person of color) as well. My plans are to introduce a heritage program for students who grew up in a predominantly Spanish-speaking household!

What are one or two humanities courses you would recommend to other students and what did you enjoy or learn from them?

I recommend the Spanish Heritage Language courses: SPAN 314, 315, and 316! If you’re a student who grew up speaking Spanish, it helps you learn about different Spanish-speaking countries, regions in the U.S. where Spanish speakers are from! You’re also likely going to stick with a core group of students and I’ve made some of my closest friends thanks to this course!

Tell us about an experience that has been meaningful to you.

I’ve done a lot these past four years! First, I’m part of Purple Group, a support/resource for undocumented students at UW! Although I may not be undocumented myself, I understand the feelings of fear, uncertainty, and distrust of being an undocumented student. I’m the treasurer this year, so I will be supporting my peers by being an ally and raising money.

I’m also apart of the Brotherhood Initiative (BI) which is a support and peer group for men of color at UW! Thanks to them I have been able to quell my imposter syndrome during my freshman and sophomore years. I have made good friends and connections thanks to the BI.

I participated in a study abroad program in Brazil during Summer Quarter 2026, with Professor Eduardo in the Spanish & Portuguese Studies Department. In this study abroad program, I focused on learning about art, activism, and music from indigenous cultures and quilombos. I had a lot of fun exploring and learning from these people.

Where on-campus is your favorite place to study, or unwind, and what makes it a good spot for you?

My favorite place is the Ethnic Cultural Center by West Campus! I have met a lot of my closest friends in that building. It’s quiet enough to study, but lively to talk to new people!

What advice would you give to new students considering a humanities major?

Please don’t be afraid to try new things! I’m so fortunate to have taken the chance to try a Spanish course, and an Education course, and I’m now on track to be a Secondary Education Spanish Teacher!
